Summary of Position:
The Groundman will assist line crew or network crew members by working on the ground, handing tools and heavy materials to workers. This position will dig holes and pad ditches and perform other similar work in connection with the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground utilities. Ideally this position will advance to become a Lineman.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Handles cables, conduit and other materials as directed
- Distributes tools and equipment needed to perform the job to crew members performing Aerial or Underground utilities installation
- Assists in setting transformers
- Works at heights in lifts and/or in bucket trucks
- Assists line crew with setting poles; fills anchor holes
- Clears undergrowth from right-of-way, removes debris and possible hazards from work zone, and performs general clean-up of job sites
- Operates roto hammer to access vaults
- Flags traffic to protect employees and the public
- May operate jackhammer or digging bars to break concrete or rocks
- Safety training as required by the position
- Paperwork filing and maintenance as needed
Essential Education and Qualifications:
- Good verbal communication skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Valid DOT Health Card
Preferred Skills:
- Class A Driver’s License (CDL)
- Experience in telecommunications or utilities infrastructure

- Must be able to endure activity involved with the job which may include prolonged and repeated lifting, bending, crouching, crawling, climbing, kneeling, reaching, digging, standing and walking.
- Must be able to work in an outdoor environment and is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions
- Ability to work at heights in lifts and/or bucket trucks
- Able to lift up to 75 pounds
