Responsible for assisting the Journeyman Lineman in constructing, energizing and maintaining electric distribution & transmission system for the City of Denton citizens and DME customers.

Essential Functions and Other Important Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Performs tasks which can be accomplished on the ground including drilling holes in poles, assembling cross arms, cleaning transformers and other equipment, installing wire holders on buildings, assisting lineman working on pole from the ground, is responsible for keeping job site clean and neat, and is responsible for stocking and upkeep of trucks in fleet
  • Cleans up work site and equipment
  • Responsible for their personal safety and the safety of their field work team
  • Learns to safely inspect, maintain, and operate motorized equipment used in distribution construction
  • Begins learning troubleshooting skills using voltmeters, amp meters and other related testing devices with direct supervision
  • Maintains reasonable telephone contact with department representatives at all hours as necessary
  • Portrays a positive image for the City of Denton and the Electric Department to employees, customers, developers, contractors and the general public
  • Follows all appropriate City of Denton and DME policies and procedures
  • Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance
Additional Duties:
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:

Groundman

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License prior to employment
OR
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job
Apprentice Lineman
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum one year of electric utility experience
  • Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License prior to employment
OR
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job
Lineman
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum Two years of electric utility experience
  • Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License prior to employment
OR
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job
 Journeyman Lineman
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Four years of electric utility experience
  • Completion of a valid 4-year Lineman Apprenticeship program that is recognized by the US Department of labor or the equivalent
OR
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job
Journeyman Lineman II
  • High School diploma or equivalent; and,
  • Six (6) years of electric utility experience; and, 
  • Two (2) years' experience as DOL Certified Journeyman Lineman,
OR
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.

Core Competencies:
  • Ability to learn to perform electric utility construction and maintenance work safely on the electric distribution and transmission system in Denton
  • Ability to learn to operate laptop computer for mapping, redlining, time keeping, and job orders
  • Ability to learn CPR, First Aid and ability to perform pole top and bucket truck rescue and to follow approved DME safety rules and regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to get along with customers and co-workers
  • Ability to learn to read and follow engineering projects, work orders, and blue prints
  • Ability to learn different types of tools and materials used in Overhead and Underground line construction and maintenance
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow departmental safety rules and safe work procedures
  • Ability to work courteously with other employees and customers
  • Ability to learn how to climb poles and work at heights greater than 30 feet
  • Ability to learn how to work within enclosed spaces
Preferences:
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Class "A" CDL driver's license
Conditions of Employment:
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class "C" Driver's License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
  • Must obtain a Texas Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of employment
  • Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
  • Must pass a physical examination
  • Must be able to respond to call-in within 30 minutes and be responsible for call when your name comes up on rotation list (Applicants must be available to be on stand-by and work emergency call-outs)
  • Ability to progress through these two steps of Apprenticeship Program within 1-1 years
  • Ability to work standby every fifth week
