Job Summary

The Journeymen Lineman supports the operation of the Florence Electricity Department's electric system under the general supervision and instruction of a Foreman or General Foreman to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations. Responsible for the construction and maintenance of transmission and distribution lines. Substitutes for Foreman when necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities and Supervision Required

  1. Performs all types of complicated construction and maintenance of de-energized and energized transmission, distribution, and Substation systems.
  2. Follow safety rules and regulations and immediately report all accidents to assigned supervisor.
  3. Maintains working knowledge of all current operational and construction specifications, to ensure that all work is completed according to requirements.
  4. Operates tools and equipment necessary to construct and maintain power lines.
  5. Assists foreman in the training of apprentice linemen, groundmen, and special equipment operators.
  6. Assists foreman with quality of work and the attainment of work schedules.
  7. Serves as acting foreman in the absence of the foreman (lineman with seniority performs this duty).
  8. Responds to outages and issues, performs troubleshooting, and restores power efficiently while maintaining a strong commitment to safety and industry best practices.
  9. Attends safety meetings, demonstrations, and other meetings relative to lineman work.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications, Experience, Training, & License

  1. High school graduate or GED certificate
  2. Completion of approved lineman apprenticeship course and/or other job related classwork or laboratory training.
  3. Valid Unrestricted Commercial Class A Driver's License or be able to obtain CDL within six months of employment.

Required Knowledge Skills Abilities

  1. Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques practiced in the journeyman lineman field.
  2. Knowledge and ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and work orders.
  3. Good verbal communication skills and write legibly.
  4. Ability to maintain good public and employee relations and respect customers' property.
  5. Ability to climb poles and work at extreme heights.
  6. Ability to safely operate vehicles, equipment, and tools required to perform journeyman lineman work.
  7. Must be able to work under stress and strain.
  8. Ability to work on high voltage lines, including energized lines.
  9. Ability to safely operate motorized vehicles.
  10. Must be able to work overtime and be available for emergency work and standby duty.
  11. Must reside within 30 miles of the Electricity Department Warehouse.
  12. Ability to perform troubleshooting duties to make necessary repairs.
  13. Knowledge and ability to learn the breakdown of RUS units required for the construction and maintenance of transmission and distribution lines.
Supervision:Β 
Supervisor makes assignments by defining objectives, priorities, and deadlines. Employee is responsible for planning and carrying out work and resolving most conflicts that arise in an efficient manner with a minimum of supervision. Β 

Physical Demands:
  1. Must be able to walk, stoop, bend, dig, climb, and lift up to 100 lbs.
  2. Must be able to work at extreme heights.
  3. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  4. Must be able to distinguish between colors.
Equipment Used:
All hand tools, vehicles, and equipment required for lineman work; two-way radio.
