Apprentice Lineman

POSITION DESCRIPTION
 
APPRENTICE 1
 
OBJECTIVE:
 
Entry level position into the Apprentice Lineman’s Training Program; learning groundman
duties and climbing techniques.
 
 
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
 
• Reports to Line Foreman, Chief Lineman, Supervisor of Operations/Director or Operations
 
• Directs: None
 
• Position is full time and is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act
 
 
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
• Assists crew by handling material, framing poles, pulling guy wires and cable, etc; also, assists in installing conduit, transformers and switch pads, and performs other related groundman duties.
                     
• Learns climbing techniques on poles with de-energized lines.
 
• Learns proper care and maintenance of climbing equipment.
 
• Learns general safety requirements and applies same to daily work; immediately notifies assigned supervisor of any accidents.
 
• Learns to operate automotive and construction equipment and the required maintenance of the same.
 
• Learns communication skills; including hand signals and radio communications.
 
• Studies basic electrical theory and applies knowledge of the same.
 
• Learns to replenish truck stock on a regular basis or as required by crew chief.
 
• In addition, other duties of equal or lesser skill may be assigned by the Chief Lineman, Line Foreman, or assigned supervisor, to meet emergencies or other operating needs.
 
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
• This job requires reading, writing and mathematics; therefore, a high school diploma or the equivalent is required.  
• Six months of related construction experience preferred, but not required.
 
• Basic computer skills preferred but not required.
                                                         
Other Requirements:
 
• Must be able to perform work by following simple instructions.
 
• Must be able to communicate with co-workers.
 
• Must be available for call outs and willing to work extra and irregular hours.
 
• Must have legible handwriting.
 
• Must have the physical ability to perform the essential functions, duties and
responsibilities of the job, which include, but are not limited to, climbing poles and structures, bending, pulling, digging, lifting and carrying loads averaging 80 pounds.
 
• Must hold a valid Virginia Learners permit for a Class A Commercial Drivers License or above, with a good driving record, and obtain a regular Class A CDL within three months of entering program; must also hold a current Department of Transportation, Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
 
• Must comply with all General Job Requirements.
 
Working Conditions:
 
• Working hours will be scheduled Monday-Friday between the hours of 6:30 am to 5:00 pm. 
 
• Required to work indoors and outdoors with exposure to heat and cold. exposure to heat and cold.
 
• Employee shall not be required to work outdoors in rain or other inclement weather, except when the Cooperative finds it necessary due to an emergency.
