This position is on a 4 day a week schedule, 10-hour workday, Monday – Thursday, 6am-4pm.


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK

Under the supervision of the electric distribution superintendent, provides ground support for linemen while completing the lineman apprenticeship program. Responsible for exercising judgment as to the details of assigned work within prescribed operating procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists linemen in:

  • Setting and changing out electric poles
  • Setting pad mounts and hanging transformers
  • Hanging capacitor banks
  • Hooking up primary and secondary meters
  • Installing and repairing street light poles
  • Installing and repairing street lights and wiring
  • Repairing meters
  • Operates a trencher and backhoe for installation
  • Backfills ground and yard work
  • Trims trees for line clearance
  • Runs chipper for branch disposal
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Prompt and regular attendance is required for this position

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

  • Performs tasks such as running errands and retrieving additional parts and equipment
  • Assures equipment is maintained safely and properly
  • Attends monthly safety meetings
  • Helps other team members accomplish tasks
  • Wears Personal Protective Equipment, as required
  • Abides by all standards, conduct and policies, as stated in Employee Handbook

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Licensure, or Certification

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Completion of accredited Line School preferred
  • Kansas Class A CDL with airbrakes required within six months

Experience, Specialized Knowledge, and Other Requirements

  • Advanced math skills
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to troubleshoot and anticipate issues
  • Safe driving practices and knowledge of state and local laws pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles on streets, roads and highways

Physical

  • Has ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as sitting, standing, walking, bending, climbing, twisting, squatting, reaching overhead, grasping, lifting, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling and handling of objects; is on feet most of shift
  • Has the ability of frequently lifting up to 50 pounds, occasionally 75 pounds with assistance
  • Has normal eyesight and depth perception, with or without correction. Ability to see and read instructions, meters, gauges, and technical materials. Must be able to distinguish between colors
  • Must possess hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to operate equipment controls
  • Must hear normal tones, with or without correction
  • Has ability to work within environment described below

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, including temperature extremes. The employee may occasionally be exposed to fumes, diesel fuel, and other chemicals and toxins. The employee will be exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; is occasionally loud.
