Apprentice Lineman
Summary
As an Apprentice Lineman, you'll learn and perform progressively skilled work to construct, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair LP&L's electric transmission and distribution systems. You'll build the knowledge and skills needed to become a Journey Lineman through classroom instruction, hands-on training, and on-the-job experience.

What You'll Do
- Build lineworker skills: Learn and perform construction, maintenance, repair, and inspection of overhead and underground electric facilities while developing the skills needed for journey-level work.
- Develop technical expertise: Build knowledge of electrical systems, equipment, construction methods, and safety practices through classroom instruction, hands-on training, and on-the-job experience.
- Perform equipment installation and maintenance: Assist with installing and maintaining poles, transformers, switches, conductors, anchors, guys, insulators, and related electrical equipment.
- Practice safe work: Apply hazard recognition, grounding, protective equipment, job briefings, tailboards, and approved work methods to protect yourself, your crew, and the public.
- Progress through the apprenticeship: Complete required coursework, examinations, skills demonstrations, and on-the-job training to progress toward Journey Lineman qualification.
- Support system reliability: Assist with outage restoration, troubleshooting, line patrols, emergency repairs, storm response, and other operational needs while maintaining required work and training records.
- Additional duties as assigned.
- Apprenticeship milestones and training requirements are completed within established timelines.
- Technical knowledge and field skills steadily progress toward Journey Lineman qualifications.
- Work is performed safely and correctly with consistent application of LP&L procedures and standards.
- Training, OJT, and work documentation is accurate and complete.
- The apprentice demonstrates increasing independence, capability, and confidence as responsibilities progress.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of a high school diploma with an additional one year of experience as a helper on a power line construction and maintenance crew or any combination of relevant education and experience.
- Physical Exam Required
- Valid Texas Drivers License
- Valid Current Class A Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of hire.
- Basic courses in lineman school and electricity are desirable;
- Previous experience in electrical, utility, construction, mechanical, or other skilled-trade work.
- Previous technical training or coursework related to electrical systems or skilled trades.
- Applicants seeking credit for previous experience must submit the request and supply supporting documentation at the time of application.
- Valid Current Class A Commercial Driver's License
- Progression is based on apprenticeship guidelines established by the Apprenticeship Training Committee.
- Apprentice 1 - No work on energized lines will be allowed.
- Apprentice 2 - Energized work will be allowed on 600v or less with direct supervision.
- Apprentice 3 - May work energized circuits 600v or less with indirect supervision and 600v or more with direct supervision.
- Apprentice 4 - May perform work on any energized circuit. In the absence of Journeyman Lineman, the Apprentice may be required to assume the duties and responsibilities of a Journeyman Lineman in accordance with the Crew Leader or Supervisor.

Skills & Competencies:
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, basic electrical theory and utility terminology and ability to apply that knowledge to transmission and distribution work.
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, electric utility equipment, construction methods, and work practices and ability to safely perform assigned tasks as skills develop.
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, electrical hazards and required safety precautions and ability to recognize hazards and follow safe work practices.
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, LP&L construction standards and safety requirements and ability to perform work in accordance with established procedures.
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, technical drawings, specifications, maps, and work documentation and ability to interpret and accurately document assigned work.
- This position primarily works in outdoor utility and construction environments and will require physical activity associated with performing and supervising electrical line work, including climbing, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and operating tools and equipment.
- The position will require continuously lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds and frequently lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds to load and transport materials and equipment.
- The employee will be required to work around energized electric facilities, construction equipment, traffic, varying weather conditions, and uneven terrain and will occasionally climb ladders, poles, structures, and equipment or kneel and work in restricted positions.
- The position will require frequent movement, visual observation, and operation of vehicles and utility equipment.
- The employee will be required to work varying hours, participate in on-call assignments, respond to emergencies, and support storm restoration as necessary to perform the responsibilities of the position.
