We are hiring a dependable and safety-focused Groundman to assist aerial linemen on fiber optic construction projects. This position is trainable on the job, but a REQUIREMENT is a Class A or Class B CDL for driving the bucket truck. This position plays a critical support role for aerial strand and fiber installation, remediation, and repair activities. Groundmen are responsible for preparing the site, supporting bucket or climbing operations, handling material and tools, spotting for equipment, and helping maintain safety and efficiency on the ground.

Key Responsibilities:Lineman Support

  • Assist linemen by staging materials, ropes, strand reels, fiber coils, and pulling equipment at the base of each pole.
  • Handle lasher lines and slack management during fiber lashing operations.
  • Maintain communication with aerial crews during lift operations and pole work.
  • Retrieve, load, or transport additional tools and parts from the truck as needed.

Site Prep & Safety

  • Set up and maintain proper traffic control and pedestrian protection around work zones.
  • Identify and flag underground utilities and clear obstacles in the work area.
  • Place signs, cones, and barricades to ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Tools & Equipment

  • Operate hand tools, ground winches, pullers, and reel trailers under lineman direction.
  • Maintain organized truck inventory of hardware, strand, grips, lasher wheels, and PPE.
  • Clean, inspect, and service tools and equipment at the end of each shift.

Documentation & Communication

  • Track daily production quantities (e.g., footage of installed or remediated strand/fiber).
  • Communicate material needs or field issues to supervisors or foremen.
  • Assist with photo documentation and field notes when required.

Qualifications:

  • 6+ months experience in construction, telecom, utility work, or outdoor labor (fiber experience preferred).
  • Basic understanding of aerial fiber optic systems is a plus.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to follow instructions closely.
  • Physically fit and able to lift up to 75 lbs, bend, squat, and stand for long periods.
  • Comfortable working near traffic, around utility poles, and under bucket trucks.
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Class A or Class B commercial drivers license (REQUIRED)

Preferred Skills / Certifications:

  • OSHA 10 Certification (or willing to obtain)
  • Flagging / Traffic Control certification
  • First Aid / CPR Certification
  • Knowledge of lashing operations, strand hardware, and telecom pull sequences is a plus

Work Environment:

  • Outdoor field-based work environment with exposure to weather, uneven terrain, and traffic.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and lift repeatedly throughout the shift.
  • May be required to travel between multiple job sites or stay on project-based assignments.
