The City of Seward is recruiting for a Journeyman Lineman. IBEW Benefits
This position is responsible for performing electrical construction, operation, maintenance, and service restoration work for the City of Seward requiring a thorough knowledge of commonly accepted utility work practices.

DETAILED WORK DUTIES:

  • Performs proper assembly or installation of overhead line construction such as framing and erection of poles, towers, and fixtures.
  • Performs proper assembly or installation of splices, indoor and outdoor terminations, load break elbows, transformers, switch cabinets, vacuum/oil switches, conduits or ducts, vaults and pads, conductors, and various types of apparatus in the secondary, distribution, and transmission voltages.
  • Climbs poles and towers and works in confined spaces such as vaults and ditches.
  • Operates equipment and vehicles related to power line maintenance, operation and construction: pickups, line trucks, man lifts, pole hole diggers, cranes, backhoes, trenchers, winches, compactors, pullers, pensioners, cable locators and fault locators.
  • Responds to and performs restoration work when power outages occur on the system. Also serves in an after-hours, on-call rotation with other crew members to respond to power outages outside normal business hours. 
  • Adheres to all safety protocols in the use of equipment and participates in all safety training as required by the position. Also utilizes all personal safety gear as required: hard hats, glasses, vests, rubber gloves, safety harnesses, ear plugs, etc.
  • Performs meter connects and disconnects as required.
  • Performs general operations housekeeping as assigned.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
A high school diploma or general education degree (GED), successful completion of an apprenticeship program which is certified by the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training and Journeyman Lineman exam. Journeyman Lineman Certification.

  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. 
  • Oral and written communications.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts to real electrical/structural design.
  • Valid State of Alaska Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake restriction removed.
  • Must be affiliated with the ABEW within 30 days of employment.
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • Must possess an Alaska Department of Labor Certificate of Fitness as a Journeyman Lineman within six months of employment.
  • Must complete ICS 100, 200,700 and 800 within first 6 months of employment.

The employee is occasionally required to balance, stoop, kneel, or bend. WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed mostly in an office setting. Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
