Summary:
A Second Class Apprentice Lineman will be familiar with all circuits and switching points and perform numerous duties involved in the maintenance and construction of overhead and underground lines in both energized and de-energized states. The Lineman shall set a safety example for co-workers, and will adhere to all safety rules, standards, and procedures promulgated by Wake Electric, NEC, NESC, REA, OSHA, and state and regulatory agencies in the conduct of their work. The Lineman shall install service drops and extensions, troubleshoot service interruptions and other system disturbances, repair and restore service, set meters, and perform service connections and disconnections. This position will be on call 24/7 for outages and will be expected to learn advanced Lineman skills through on-the-job training as well as through classroom-type training provided by Wake Electric. Competencies shall be demonstrated through assessment and/or job evaluation prior to progressing to higher levels of Lineman classification.

Principal Duties and/or Requirements:
- Requirement: Mastery of all requirements for Fourth and Third Class Apprentice Lineman position.
- Adheres to and ensures all assigned employees adhere to and stay current on all safety rules, standards, and procedures promulgated by Wake Electric, NEC, NESC, REA, OSHA, and state and regulatory agencies in the performance of all work.
- Safely works on electric power lines in energized and de-energized states and ensures that all safety precautions, procedures, and rules are followed by self and teammates.
- Supports work activities of a two-man maintenance crew during outage situations, ensuring all repairs are performed in a safe and efficient manner and there is no hazard to the public or subcontractors.
- Provides on-the-job training to Third and Fourth Class Apprentice Lineman trainees or other subordinates and assistants.
- Provides maintenance of devices such as OCRs, OCBs, regulators, transformers, transformer banks, poles, and all such devices that ensure reliable electric service.
- Performs substation work, provides communication with a power supplier, and corrects other system problems.
- Installs and repairs underground lines to include setting PVC conduit into place and pulling cable through, terminating cable on pads, and installing customer metering equipment.
- Develops knowledge of all relevant equipment and systems, including Wake Electric mapping system, Mobile Work Force, and Work Force Scheduler.
- Ability to direct and administer first aid, pole top, and aerial device rescue.
- Regularly maintains own tools and Wake Electric’s tools, keeps equipment in good working order such as pliers, crescent wrenches, channel locks, wire cutters, hydraulic presses, and bucket truck, and ensures tools and equipment are replaced as needed in a timely manner.
- Maintains accurate daily time record and ensures all time is charged to correct accounts.
- Attends regularly scheduled safety meetings, vendor schools, and special training and safety sessions, as assigned.
- Attends in-house training classes in preparation for job progression.
